Some thoughts on hospital visits as a pagan/witch by a Witch/Hospital staff for 3 years.

honestlystupendouscrusade

I have had a handful of Pagan/Witch patients over the years and it seems like some of them are at a loss on how they can incorporate their faith into such a non-private/sterile environment. Here are some tips from the other side of that blood presser cuff.

  • Most of us don’t care if you’re pagan, we care that you keep breathing. By that I mean, that if you want to express your faith then do so. Just no fire. In a hospital, fire can get dangerous like BOOM-BANG DANGEROUS! (Other than that we will respect your beliefs as much as any other religion)
  • Most nurses see faith as a big part of healing and thriving when you are sick. So finding something that has meaning to you that you can hang onto when in the hospital can help you get better faster/makes you feel more whole.
  • Tips:
    • Electric candles are a good substitute to real candles (NO REAL FIRE! FIRE=Hospital go BOOM)
    • Crystals and religious jewelry is always a good go to. If you need to go down to a test, tell your nurse that you want to keep your religious jewelry with you and ask your nurse if they can check with the doctor or radiologist if you could hold it in your hand/wrap it around your ankle. If they say you still can’t for some reason ask them to get a denture cup with you patient sticker on it so you can put your stones and jewelry in it when out of the room for safe keeping.
    • Oils like blessing oils/ healing oils can be added to bath water. If you can’t wash yourself up at the time, ask your Aid/CNA if they could add it to the water after you have washed your face and private areas. Make sure the oil is safe to add to your bath water or put on your skin beforehand. You CNA will want to know this beforehand. Also, pick Oils that are safe to be around pregnant folks. You never know if you CNA/RN could be pregnant.
    • Privacy tips: If you are in a shared room, pull your curtain all the way around your bed when you need space or have your nurse/CNA help you pull it around. Also, you can ask your CNA/RN to put a note on your door that says “Prayer in progress. Please do not disturb. Check with Nurse before entering room.
    • Never put something you care about on your meal tray. It will diaper with your tray when they come to take it away and it will NEVER be seen again!
  • Now by now, you may have picked up on my use of the words: FAITH, PRAYER, RELIGIOUS, and other terms like them. That because if you are still in the broom closet or don’t feel comfortable explaining your practice to your health care team then you can use terms like this and still get the space and respect that any faith would get.
  • Last tip:
    • If your nurse looks strat at your Witchy/Pagan jewelry and tells you that they like it, you got a 80% chance you just found yourself a Broom Closet Nurse :)  A lot of nurses keep their Pagan ways to themselves for job reasons but there is a surprisingly large number of us at the hospital I work at. After all are witches naturally healers? :)
